Behind the scenes - Hearts and Minds. Improving lives, one smile at a time.

Training to become a Clowndoctor or Elderflower begins with a month-long rehearsal process led by our Artistic Director, members of the artistic team, and visiting specialists.

Performers develop their healthcare clown character and rehearse skills specific to healthcare clowning – such as improvising in a duo, co-creating with the people we visit, puppetry/object manipulation, musicality, and sensory clowning.

We also offer extensive “pilot” training where our performers learn about the healthcare environment from the perspectives of patient and staff, hygiene protocols, referrals procedure, feedback and evaluation.

Check out this short documentary about our training

When we audition performers, we expect them to have experience in theatre clowning. Some of our artistic team lead their own clown training.
